In addition to the degree requirements specified, (12) credit hours of graduate physics or appropriate related fields, approved by the student’s advisory committee, should be completed in his/her field of specialization.
In addition to the general doctoral degree requirements, the following course requirements apply to all curricula:
PHYS 5001 – Intro to Research and Scientific Communication (2 cr) (must take in first two semesters)
PHYS 5002 – Intro to Research and Scientific Communication (2 cr) (must take in first two semesters)
PHYS 5005 Advanced Dynamics (3 cr)
PHYS 5008 – Statistical Mechanics (3 cr)
PHYS 5009 – Methods of Theoretical Physics (3 cr)
PHYS 5010 – Electromagnetism (3 cr)
PHYS 5018 – Quantum Mechanics (3 cr)
PHYS 4025 – Astrophysics III: Plasma Astrophysics (3 cr)
OR PHYS 5026 – Fluid Dynamics (3 cr)
OR PHYS 5027 – Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (3 cr)
PHYS 5079 – Graduate-Faculty Seminar (1 cr) (must be taken for the first four semesters)
9 credit hours in mathematics beyond that required of an undergraduate physics major.
While the listed courses are the simplest route to achieving this credit, a student may petition their committee and the department chair with proposed substitute course work or other prior experience demonstrating equivalent competence in any of these areas. Further, New Mexico. Tech students who took one of the listed courses as part of a prior degree program at Tech and passed it with a grade of B- or higher are not required to retake the course.
