Readmission for regular degree-seeking undergraduate students who left on good standing

A student who has not been continuously enrolled for an Academic year (Fall and Spring excluding summer session) must submit an application for readmission to the Office of the Registrar. A student who left on good academic standing must submit the following:

If you attended another institution while away from NMT, an official transcript will be required with the submission of your readmission application. A student will not be considered for readmission unless all transcripts have been received.

Readmission applications are processed beginning in November for the Spring semester, beginning in July for Fall semester, and beginning in May for the Summer semester. Readmission applications must be completed and submitted the Friday before classes begin for each semester.

Readmission for regular degree-seeking undergraduate students who left on academic probation or suspension

A student who has not been continuously enrolled for an Academic year (Fall and Spring excluding summer session) must submit an application for readmission to the Office of the Registrar. A student who left while on academic probation or academic suspension must submit the following documents:

Readmission Application which can be downloaded from here.
A one-page Appeal Letter that persuasively makes a case for Readmission. Please include the following:
- An explanation of why you did poorly.
- An explanation of what you plan to do differently to be successful.
- Any other information that shows the committee you are ready to be a successful student at NMT.
A Supporting Letter from the Student’s Advisor. If you are changing majors, this letter can be from your old advisor, new advisor, or both.
An Academic Warning Packet, which can be downloaded from here. If you are changing majors, the packet must be completed with/approved by your new advisor.
Any documents the student thinks are relevant, such as medical documents or letters of support from faculty, counselors, or the Dean of Students.
Official transcripts for any colleges/universities attended since leaving New Mexico Tech.

When readmitted from suspension status the student will be on probation and subject to all the rules and regulations of a student on probation. Failure to meet the minimum grade point average for academic good standing will result in a second suspension from the Institute for a period of a Full Academic year (Spring, Summer, Fall). Credits earned at another institution during duration of suspension will not be accepted for transfer.

A student in good standing will be readmitted by the Registrar. Application and material submitted by a student who left while on academic probation or academic suspension will be reviewed by the Academic Standards and Admission Committee and written notice of the decision will be given to the petitioner.

Students will not be readmitted after their third suspension except in very unusual circumstances on a case-by-case basis.

Conditions of Readmission

A readmitted student must choose degree requirements to be satisfied from the catalog in effect when the student was readmitted or any subsequent catalog, provided the student is continuously enrolled after readmission. A student readmitted by the Academic Standards and Admission Committee must follow the guidelines set by the committee. If accepted for readmission, a student on academic probation will be automatically placed on academic probation for 1 semester excluding the summer semester. A student accepted for readmission from suspension will be automatically placed on academic probation for 3 semesters excluding summer semesters and subject to all the rules and regulations of a student on probation.

Appeal Deadlines

Deadlines for appealing admission decisions are on the 10th of every calendar month. Students may appeal one time per semester, fall, spring, and summer. Appeal applications submitted after the 10th will be reviewed the following month. The Academic Standards and Admissions Committee will meet within 5 business days of each appeal application deadline to evaluate the cases and make a determination. The Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs will be an active participant in the monthly meetings and will make recommendations on the student’s situation to the committee. All decisions will be final.

Deadlines for appealing admission decisions are on the 10th of every calendar month. Students may apply.

Readmission After Ten Years

If a student is readmitted to the university after not being continuously enrolled for more than ten years (from the last enrolled term), then the student will be treated as a transfer student. A transfer evaluation will be performed in consultation with the academic department.

For courses related to the major: the department would evaluate course content and major requirements to identify whether completed courses satisfy the learning outcomes and requirements associated with the major that are currently in effect.
For courses related to the General Education program: the academic dean of the appropriate college, in consultation with academic departments, would evaluate course content and general education requirements to identify whether completed courses satisfy the learning outcomes and requirements associated with the program that are currently in effect.
All credits remain on the student’s transcript and may count toward a degree’s credit requirement (e.g., elective credit).
