Program Description

The Master of Science degree in Geochemistry may be earned either with thesis or without thesis, as outlined below in accordance with the general requirements of the Graduate Program.

Program Information & Policies

With Thesis:

The student’s course of study must be approved by the advisory committee and must fulfill the general requirements for the master’s degree with thesis and must include: (i) At least six credit hours of GEOC 5091 (Thesis, master’s program); (ii) two credit hours of GEOC 5092 (Graduate Seminar); (iii) at least four credit hours of GEOC 5093 (Seminar), unless the degree is completed in a shorter time; and (iv) at least 15 credit hours in graduate geochemistry or chemistry courses, 9 of which must have a GEOC designation (up to 3 credit hours of this requirement may be replaced with non- geochemistry graduate courses with the committee’s approval). As part of the degree requirements students must have completed GEOL 2160 (mineralogy) and CHEM 3031 (physical chemistry), unless taken in undergraduate work. These requirements may be replaced by upper division mineralogy or thermodynamics courses with approval from the student’s committee.

Without Thesis:

Courses approved by the student’s advisory committee must fulfill the general requirements for the master’s degree without thesis and must include: (i) At least three credit hours of GEOC 5090 (Independent Study); two credit hours of GEOC 5092 (Graduate Seminar); at least four credit hours of GEOC 5093 (Seminar), unless the degree is completed in a shorter time; and at least 15 credit hours in graduate geochemistry or chemistry courses, 9 of which must have a GEOC designation (up to 3 credit hours of this

requirement may be replaced with non-geochemistry graduate courses with the committee’s approval).
