Joseph R. Skeen Library

The Joseph R. Skeen Library’s collection and services support the educational, research, public service, and economic development mission of New Mexico Tech. The library maintains a collection of over 1.1 million eBooks and printed books, maps, government documents, and periodicals. A majority of the items in the library’s collection are digital and accessible 24/7 through the library’s website. Skeen Library also works to protect its users’ right to privacy, supports intellectual freedom, and upholds intellectual property rights.

Housed in an attractive, three-story building with a prominent clock tower, the Skeen Library actively works to provide a safe, welcoming, and friendly environment. Food, drink, and talking are all allowed in the library. Skeen Library provides a free coffee bar; seven reservable study rooms and other study rooms; a presentation seminar room; a variety of flexible technology-equipped group study areas; a computer lab; a popular DVD collection; and a popular reading collection. The library provides the general public with free access to internet-connected computers and WiFi internet connections, as well as having 40 computers dedicated only for student use. Also available are a Virtual/Augmented Reality system, connected with the Drone Lab in cooperation with the Mechanical Engineering Department.

The library provides inter-library loan services to students and faculty members allowing access to the collections of over 75,000 libraries worldwide. and faculty who wish to visit other libraries may also request Passports to attain borrowing privileges at other university libraries in New Mexico.

The library is the custodian of archival materials relating to the history of the institution; an extensive map collection; a historical microform collection of Socorro newspapers; an comprehensive collection of historical geologic and mining materials; the President Workman Papers; and the personal library of the late U.S. Representative Joseph R. Skeen.
